Augusta ME Strongman Challenge Write up

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

First event was a max log press. Now, log press is my worst event, I would have been happy with just breaking a PR but I ended up tying for 2nd with 210lbs which was a 10-15lb PR for me on log press so I was happy with this. There was a slight mishap because the max log started at 110lbs and you only get 3 max attempts, jumps of 20 lbs. So basically everyone but one kid skipped until about 190lbs. I told the ref I wanted to jump in at 190lbs but he messed up and threw me in at 170lbs. Not a big deal, I stuck with my plan and did 210lbs after that then a failed attempt at 230lbs. After looking at the video it was the usually reason I fail on the heavier log lifts, I try and press it in front of me, not over head like you are supposed to which when the weight gets heavy my form goes to crap.

Next up was car deadlift. This is one of my best lifts so I felt confident I would take this how ever I ended up costing myself first place because of another rookie mistake. I got way too hyped up before my lift and forgot to wait for the down commands on the lifts and was just banging reps out like nothing which if they all counted would have gave me first. Towards the end I just lost breath, the strength was still fully there. I started getting disoriented and took my straps off but then heard someone yelling at me to keep going so I grabbed the bar with no straps and got 1 last lift in. I had no problem doing that last lift my hand just slipped off at the end because it was a 2” handle and slick as hell but my back had no problem doing the weight. I wish they just watched for a lockout and as soon as you got it gave you the rep since it was a timed event.

After the car deadlift I was pretty pissed, I think I lost by 1 or 2 due to my screw up and as soon as I was done I made a b-line for the door to get outside and cool off, I was all disoriented for quite a while but they gave us a good break in between to recover. Everyone else I talked to said they were ready for a nap, as was I. Either way I blew my old PR out of the water!

After taking second on this I knew I had to win all the remaining events to win it but things did not go as planned. Next up was the Yoke and tire medley. The yoke was so light I actually started in a sprinting stance and started running full speed for the finish line. I talked to my buddy who was taping and he said nobody even came close on the yoke speed I had, it was the tire that killed me. Just took a bad bounce off the floor and busted my lip open then my foot slid. Just bad luck right there, nothing I can do about it. I actually took 3rd on this event but the top 3 times were very close I believe. I was very, very un happy about this one. The remaining events (including this one) were all athletic ones which I knew I had but just wasn’t my day.

Farmers were the second to last lift. After seeing the times on the yoke I had a lot of confidence that I could beat everyone and hopefully the guy in first would take 2nd or 3rd and lose some points. As with most of the stuff the weight was nothing for me, started off in a sprinting stance again and took off. The turn at the end was very tight and when I clipped the keg it just sent me into a turn which I couldn’t get out of. The thing that made me most angry was getting marked for distance and not time, 99 mother f&&*()g feet!!!!!!! Reminded me of when poundstone got jipped at the super series on the frame carry. When I took the spill I was pretty sure I was already over the line and everyone came running thinking I was hurt but all I cared about was what my time was. After hearing I got marked for distance I said a few bad words and stormed off. Once I cooled off a little all I had was a scrape on my hand from the whole thing.

After that I knew it was over, the farmers screw up put me in last for that event making me pass up A LOT of points so I knew 2nd was the best I would get. Either way, I had broken a lot of PR’s, and stones which I am very good at was up next so I had nothing to lose, just gave it everything I got.

Stones were where I made up for everything. I was still in 2nd overall so I got to go 2nd to last which was somewhat of an advantage but when I got up there I just flung the stones up, only screw up was me trying to one motion the 230 stone and having to re pick it which cost me a few seconds but I still won. Crowd was roaring, I was pumped up from throwing them up so fast and put me in a much better mood.

Overall I think it was a good day. I really wanted first and I’m not going to make any excuses why I didn’t get it, I screwed up plain and simple. I’ll chalk it up to inexperience and learn from my mistakes and do even better next time. I think I covered everything, if you guys want to know anything else let me know. If there’s any big spelling mistakes just let me know, I’m still sore as hell and half out of it so I’ll fix them later. Thanks for everyone’s comments and support!
