A damn good fight at nationals!

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

Ok before I start the write up let me start with the bad news. My dad fucked up the video taping on practically every event so I only have the truck pull and log medley on tape. Hopefully someone else was taping the whole thing so I can get the rest of the videos, my stone run was the best I have ever done and damn impressive from what I was told. I will have the pics up shortly I need to get the cable from my friend for the camera.

Where do I start?! Coming away with a disappointing 2nd place in my last comp. in Maine I took away many things. Mainly that I needed to control myself when competing which I did phenomenally at nationals and one of the reasons I was happy with 3rd. This was probably my best show, no major mess ups at all which I was happy with. When it was all over I finally realized to myself that this is nationals, not a regular contest. I went up against 16 of the best lightweight in the United States. Taking away a podium finish with no major mistakes that would have upset me severely if I had done poorly because of them. The day before was the worst day of my life, woke up at 4am had a protein shake, got to the hotel around 9am and had an apple before we went into the city to site see. Around 12 I was dying, no water since the protein shake at 4am and I was starving so I had ½ of a footlong steak and cheese from subway and a mouthful of lemonaid. Then we went up to the sears tower after that got lost and walked in a big circle further depleting my energy levels and putting me in a worse mood, lol. On the car ride back to the hotel I treated myself to one of those tiny cereal boxes kids get at hotels for breakfast, a whopping 190cals. Got back to the hotel around 2 passed out until 4ish. Then I went down to the hot tub and sweated out some more water.

We headed down to the weigh ins and 5 and I had weighed myself on the hotel scale before we left and said I was 197. The official weigh in I was 199, ONE pound away from the cut off! Very lucky. After that we went straight to get food then I went home and went to bed. Ate half a bagel with cream cheese, a little coffee and a little juice as well as a banana before the comp. I get bad nerves before comps and can’t eat anything.

First even was the truck pull, it was a semi truck which they said was between 20-30,000lbs (9-13,000KG). The only time I had done a truck pull prior to this was my first comp and I had a torn calf so I really didn’t know what to expect. When I stepped up to get chained in willie askes me what I weighed in at and I laughed and told him 199 and he said damn, you look like you’re 230, you’re going to have a good run. I was towards the end to go and most of the guys were putting up times around 37-35seconds. When I went I got 30seconds flat and set the new record. I ended up taking 3rd in this losing only by 10ths of a second. The guys ahead of me had something like 29.85sec or so. With times that close anything could have set you down a place so I didn’t fret on it to much and tried to focus on the next event.

Log press medley was next, I hate this event. Right now I’m just not built for it and can’t really compete with at 200lbs with guys who are shorter then me and have much less of a ROM then I do. I did what I expected to do, all but the last log which was 230. Only 1 or 2 guys got this. I placed ok in this event, I think 4th or 5th. Overall I was consistently placing just shy of the top 3.

Then we had the tire flip. The tire was very very light, only 500lbs but the catch was there was NO GRIP. Now when guys say there tire has no grip because the nobs are worn down that’s not what I’m talking about, this tire was flat against the ground. There was physically no way to get your hands under it so what we ended up having to do was kind of try to grab on to part of the tread and just lay into it. The guys in the open were even complaining that their tire was easier to flip. Not sure exactly where I placed on this, I had a pretty quick time; I think I placed 3 or 4 on this.

Farmers were up next. It was only 210lbs per hand but for max distance and it was the 2nd to last event and most of us were beat. I was shooting for 3 runs but just barely got 2. This was the worst performance on farmers I have ever had. Never before have I had my grip fail except this time. I placed middle of the pack here and basically blew my shot at winning with this piss poor run. I think I ended up getting ~148ft.

At this point I was 4th place with 53 points, 2nd and 3rd each had 55 and 1st had 61 I think. Stones were last, my favorite. I knew I had to set a damn good time to get some points to place but that wasn’t much of a worry. They ended up changing out stones to the same weights as the heavy weights but that wasn’t a problem for me. I blasted through the first 4 and then set up for the last one which was 335. From what I was told I was about 6 inches from loading it and I was too far back from the platform. Just breaking the stone and bringing it up that far was a big PR for me. I ended up taking 2nd in the stones and only 1 kid was able to load the 335 and he ended up winning the whole thing.

Overall this was a very close race. It was pretty much between me and 5 other kids the entire time, there was a big gap between skill levels for about half the competition. From what I remember the top 5 were pretty much separated by 1 point for a long time. When I can get the official score sheets ill post them up as well. Again this was cut throat competition with the best of the best. This was my 4th comp I have done so I am pretty happy with the results.

As for how the comp went. Very, very well organized we moved along pretty quick. Great job to Jason Bever for his hard work running the show. I want to thank elitefitness.com and agxsports.com for sponsoring me and helping me get to nationals. Without their support i probably would not have been able to go. Also want to thanks APT for donating prizes as well as everyone else that donated things and was there to support us. A few things that I heard brought up by some of the people: The location was kind of small for nationals and kind of secluded. I guess a lot of us were expecting it to be something real big in the city with a lot of spectators. The crowd was also pretty quiet the whole time seeing as it was nationals. I’ve been to a lot smaller shows and had crazier crowds. I didn’t think of this but heard someone bring up that there was no medical staff there. Now that I think of it all the shows I have been to usually had an ambulance there or some medical staff but I guess that boils down to an insurance thing. The important thing is nobody got hurt (that I heard of). Overall it was a great time. Made a lot of friends and was a great show. That’s all I can come up with now, I’m still beat from yesterday and have been up since 3am today so I need to get some rest. I’ll try and get all the pictures up around dinner time.

Fatbacks Team Comp. Martinsville, VA

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

PHEW have i been busy! First off let me say its not easy being a full time student, working part time job and training and finding the time to take off to fly to VA for the weekend to do a comp, none the less it was a great time! The flight down was pretty good, no hassles at all except for the guy at the car rental place messing me with and my dad telling us the car ran on vegetable oil and it had no ac, power windows, radio, etc. but my dad being the smart ass he is messed right back with the guy. We ended up getting a PT cruiser which aside from looking incredibly lame had no power what so ever, do not buy that car if you are planning on it.

Being in VA was quite the experience. The drive to the hotel was about 2 hrs of farms, shacks and hills. Everything you would expect stereotype wise for the south. Met up with my partner Tom and talked a little strategy then we went and got some VERY good BBQ at a place called pigs r us. Morning of the contest had more then normal butterfly’s in my stomach and jitters which wore off in time for the comp to start. All of the guys i was up against have very good track records and years of experience i do not. This was a good thing tho because i had to push hard to keep up. Alot of the stuff was stamina orientated.

First event was the yoke, 600lbs and 160′ course. Two total drops allowed per team. Now im sure others in the sport will tell you, having that much weight on your back your using every muscle in your body, focusing mainly on keeping a tight midsection which in turn makes you need to use the bath room. That being said After my first warm up had to make a trip to the bathroom then again right as we started i had to go again which was no so good timing. As soon as i ran back from the bathroom i had to put my wraps on and go as we were up next. My calves were pumped from the jog back and i was slightly winded which did not help as I’m not that good at heavy yoke events since i just don’t have the body (wide frame, big hips, etc) needed to be good at yoke. My partner Tom made a slow but steady 60′ then i made it about 50′ with 2 drops and Tom cleaned it up. Neither of us were that good at the yoke so we were actually glad we finished the course.

Next i believe was the tire flip. 700lb tire for 14 flips total. This was just about right, on the 6th flip i was winded and the 7th i got pretty easy but anything over that would have been a nightmare. Looking back at the videos i think we were a little too conservative on the tire in regards to pushing it down as we did not want to have it bouncing around costing us time.

Then we had the 90lb DB snatch/clean and press. We placed low in the mainly due to the fact that we are both tall and not that good of pressers. Most commonly the lightweight class is full of shorter stocky guys who are much better at pressing due to the fact that they don’t have to move the dumbbell as far as the tall guys do. I knew before and after this that my pressing was week and i needed to work on it so just going to keep with hammering the overhead work.

Then we had the deadlift. :) Me and Tom are both very good deadlifters, its both of ours favorite lift and this was the last thing we were gonna let anyone beat us in! I think we had 7-8 pulls total which was kind of a stupid plan as im sure it took alot out of us for stones (not that it mattered but we’ll get to that in a second). Our best pull was 1200lbs and we missed the 1250. Very happy with this event, can’t wait to see the videos when i get the dvd in the mail. My partner tom is also making a nice poster at his work of the lift.

Last but not least atlas stones, my favorite event. Unfortunately this event SUCKED! The stone was a 315, felt like the 300 i train with so weight wasnt an issue. The kids that went before us got jack tack off over the thing and the 85* heat basically turned it into grease. I managed 2 reps but this thing would slip non stop. I would have had an easy 5 if i could actually grab the damn thing.

All in all we ended up placing 5th out of 7th.

Augusta ME Strongman Challenge Write up

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

First event was a max log press. Now, log press is my worst event, I would have been happy with just breaking a PR but I ended up tying for 2nd with 210lbs which was a 10-15lb PR for me on log press so I was happy with this. There was a slight mishap because the max log started at 110lbs and you only get 3 max attempts, jumps of 20 lbs. So basically everyone but one kid skipped until about 190lbs. I told the ref I wanted to jump in at 190lbs but he messed up and threw me in at 170lbs. Not a big deal, I stuck with my plan and did 210lbs after that then a failed attempt at 230lbs. After looking at the video it was the usually reason I fail on the heavier log lifts, I try and press it in front of me, not over head like you are supposed to which when the weight gets heavy my form goes to crap.

Next up was car deadlift. This is one of my best lifts so I felt confident I would take this how ever I ended up costing myself first place because of another rookie mistake. I got way too hyped up before my lift and forgot to wait for the down commands on the lifts and was just banging reps out like nothing which if they all counted would have gave me first. Towards the end I just lost breath, the strength was still fully there. I started getting disoriented and took my straps off but then heard someone yelling at me to keep going so I grabbed the bar with no straps and got 1 last lift in. I had no problem doing that last lift my hand just slipped off at the end because it was a 2” handle and slick as hell but my back had no problem doing the weight. I wish they just watched for a lockout and as soon as you got it gave you the rep since it was a timed event.

After the car deadlift I was pretty pissed, I think I lost by 1 or 2 due to my screw up and as soon as I was done I made a b-line for the door to get outside and cool off, I was all disoriented for quite a while but they gave us a good break in between to recover. Everyone else I talked to said they were ready for a nap, as was I. Either way I blew my old PR out of the water!

After taking second on this I knew I had to win all the remaining events to win it but things did not go as planned. Next up was the Yoke and tire medley. The yoke was so light I actually started in a sprinting stance and started running full speed for the finish line. I talked to my buddy who was taping and he said nobody even came close on the yoke speed I had, it was the tire that killed me. Just took a bad bounce off the floor and busted my lip open then my foot slid. Just bad luck right there, nothing I can do about it. I actually took 3rd on this event but the top 3 times were very close I believe. I was very, very un happy about this one. The remaining events (including this one) were all athletic ones which I knew I had but just wasn’t my day.

Farmers were the second to last lift. After seeing the times on the yoke I had a lot of confidence that I could beat everyone and hopefully the guy in first would take 2nd or 3rd and lose some points. As with most of the stuff the weight was nothing for me, started off in a sprinting stance again and took off. The turn at the end was very tight and when I clipped the keg it just sent me into a turn which I couldn’t get out of. The thing that made me most angry was getting marked for distance and not time, 99 mother f&&*()g feet!!!!!!! Reminded me of when poundstone got jipped at the super series on the frame carry. When I took the spill I was pretty sure I was already over the line and everyone came running thinking I was hurt but all I cared about was what my time was. After hearing I got marked for distance I said a few bad words and stormed off. Once I cooled off a little all I had was a scrape on my hand from the whole thing.

After that I knew it was over, the farmers screw up put me in last for that event making me pass up A LOT of points so I knew 2nd was the best I would get. Either way, I had broken a lot of PR’s, and stones which I am very good at was up next so I had nothing to lose, just gave it everything I got.

Stones were where I made up for everything. I was still in 2nd overall so I got to go 2nd to last which was somewhat of an advantage but when I got up there I just flung the stones up, only screw up was me trying to one motion the 230 stone and having to re pick it which cost me a few seconds but I still won. Crowd was roaring, I was pumped up from throwing them up so fast and put me in a much better mood.

Overall I think it was a good day. I really wanted first and I’m not going to make any excuses why I didn’t get it, I screwed up plain and simple. I’ll chalk it up to inexperience and learn from my mistakes and do even better next time. I think I covered everything, if you guys want to know anything else let me know. If there’s any big spelling mistakes just let me know, I’m still sore as hell and half out of it so I’ll fix them later. Thanks for everyone’s comments and support!

Events in order they were at the comp. I weighted in at 212, open teen class.
